I was thinking how to keep my mind straight and I decided to photograph the metamorphosis of NYC almost every night, starting at midnight, as part of my own salvation. Those long nights spent on the deserted streets of NYC, led me to “Artsanity” film project.

PARALLEL DREAMS
(film trailer for short film)

An artist Joseph Cornell immerses himself in the music of Debussy as he makes his art, watching his creation slowly come alive. At the same time, a dream is visiting Cornell, influencing his thoughts and decisions, and guiding him on how to complete his artwork. The experience leaves the viewer uncertain and unnerved about where the real world begins and ends. It's almost as if there is a parallel universe mirroring our life on Earth and it is the dream that spans over like a bridge connecting those universes.

The ghost of Mary Kingsbury Simkhovitch returns to Greenwich House, the community settlement she founded over a century earlier and roams through the musical landscape that now thrives there.

Inspiration:
In 1902, Mary Kingsbury Simkhovitch founded the Greenwich House settlement as a haven for newly-arrived immigrants striving to adjust to life in a new country; today, Greenwich House offers diverse art, education and social service programs, and has provided countless New Yorkers with enriching and stimulating cultural experiences.
In this film, we take a journey with the ghost of Simkhovitch as she roams through Greenwich House, a voyage that blends together aspects of both past and present, set against a soundscape created by the musicians and composers who work there today. This piece was inspired by the compositions of Joan La Barbara, her performances and collaborations with the Ne(x)tworks musical ensemble, and the life of Mary Kingsbury Simkhovitch.

Director Statement

As a filmmaker, I feel like it is my duty to confront the challenges that surround us. CAPIO is a science fiction feature film about how our society’s unconditional love of technology leaves us vulnerable to political and economical manipulation and loss of privacy and freedom.

The explosive growth of the online world has changed not just our lifestyle, but also the way we relate to each other and perceive the world around us. My film offers a vision of a near-future world in which our digital dependency threatens to make us all less human.

And once a technology has insinuated itself into our lives without restrictions or oversight, it can become nearly impossible to tear ourselves free again.

By relying too heavily on algorithms, humans stand to lose their ability to understand each other or develop solutions for society’s problems.

It is only by being free to make and learn from mistakes that humans can continue to evolve.

I believe that films may not be able to change society, but they can inspire the people who can create a change.

Aleksandar Kostic
